Ripple chips, also called ridged or wavy chips, are potato chips cut with a crinkled blade, so each slice has parallel ridges. The ridges make the chip thicker and sturdier than a flat chip, give it a heavier crunch and hold more seasoning, which is why ripple cuts are often used for dips and bold flavours. It is a subcategory of potato chips.
The ripple chips on SeekSnack are American: Ruffles from Frito-Lay, Utz’s Bar-B-Q ripple cut and Honey BBQ wavy chips, and Chip Thunder Rumble chips from Snyder’s-Lance. Thai-made Lay’s Rock ridged chips use a similar cut and are filed under potato chips.
Plain ripple chips are usually just potato, oil and salt; flavoured versions can add milk, wheat or soy in the seasoning.
