Squid are marine cephalopods, relatives of octopus and cuttlefish. In Thailand they are a favourite snack in many forms: sun-dried and grilled, shredded, pressed and rolled into sheets, baked until crisp, or ground into powder for seasonings. Drying concentrates squid’s sweet, savoury taste and turns the flesh pleasantly chewy, while baking makes it crunchy.
SeekSnack reviews several squid snacks. In Squidy Baked Squid (Boxed) the squid is simply baked with sugar, salt and chilli, so its own flavour comes through clearly. In Carada Rice Ball Cuttlefish (Squid) it is a flavouring ingredient in a puffed rice and corn snack.
Squid is a mollusc, an allergen group that must be declared in the EU and other markets. Mollusc allergy is separate from crustacean (shrimp and crab) allergy, although some people react to both. Squid snacks are not vegetarian.
