INS 460 (ii) is powdered cellulose, numbered E460(ii) in Europe. INS 460 covers the celluloses: (i) is microcrystalline cellulose, which is partly broken down with acid, while (ii) is cellulose that has simply been purified and mechanically ground into a fine, white, tasteless powder. The usual raw material is wood pulp or other plant fibre.
Codex lists it as an anticaking agent, bulking agent, emulsifier, glazing agent, humectant, stabilizer and thickener. Cellulose does not dissolve in water and is not digested, so it counts as insoluble dietary fibre.
In snacks it mostly keeps powders loose and adds body. The Snack Jack green pea snacks list it as a bulking agent in their seasoning, and it is also among the additives in Violet Orange Flavoured Wafer and Cororo Grape Jelly.
