Honey butter seasoning is a powder that coats snacks with a sweet, buttery and slightly salty flavour. Recipes are the maker’s own, but such seasonings typically combine sugar, honey powder, butter or milk powder, salt and flavourings. Honey butter became a hugely popular snack flavour in South Korea in the mid-2010s and soon spread from crisps to nuts, popcorn and more.
Tom’s Farm’s Honey Butter Almond shows how it is used: roasted almonds, about 73% of the pack, are coated with syrup and sugar and then with honey butter seasoning (3.8%). The syrup and sugar make a sweet, crunchy shell, and the seasoning adds the honey-butter aroma.
Because these seasonings usually contain butter or milk powder, they typically include milk, and here they are paired with almonds, a tree nut. The same product also lists aspartame as a sweetener, which carries a phenylalanine notice on labels in many countries.
