“Flavoring agent” is a broad term for flavourings added to give or strengthen a taste and aroma. On its own it does not say where the flavour comes from: it may be a natural extract, a nature-identical substance made to match a molecule found in nature, a synthetic flavouring, or a blend of these. Labels that want to be specific say “natural flavor”, “nature-identical flavor” or “artificial flavoring” instead, and some list a general flavouring next to those.
Flavourings are usually complex mixtures of aroma compounds dissolved or dispersed in a carrier such as maltodextrin or propylene glycol. They are used in tiny amounts, yet they shape what a snack smells and tastes like: the butter in a croissant filling, a seafood note in crisps, or banana in a cake.
On SeekSnack, “Flavoring Agent” appears on Pringles - Pizza, on Today - Croissant Chocolate and Hazelnut & Vanilla Cream Filling and on the Shoei Tokyo Sweet Banana cake.
