Chocolate chips are small drops or chunks of chocolate, often with a flat base and a pointed top, made especially for baking. They are formulated with a little less cocoa butter than eating chocolate, or with some vegetable fat, so they soften in the oven but largely keep their shape instead of melting into the dough.
They are what define a chocolate chip cookie: a plain or cocoa dough with pockets of chocolate that stay distinct after baking. In factory-made cookies the chips may be real chocolate or a compound made with vegetable fat, and the label usually lists their own ingredients in brackets.
Chocolate chips typically contain sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter or vegetable fat, and often milk and soy lecithin. On SeekSnack they appear in Arnott’s cookies, such as Arnott’s Good Time Classic Chocochips Cookies and Arnott’s Good Time Double Choc.
