Pocky is a thin, crunchy biscuit stick dipped in chocolate or another flavoured coating, with one end left bare as a handle. It was created by the Japanese confectioner Ezaki Glico and first sold in 1966; Glico says the name comes from the “pock” sound the stick makes when it snaps.
Thai Glico Co., Ltd., Glico’s first company outside Japan, introduced Pocky in Thailand in 1972 and developed a chocolate coating that holds up better in the hot climate. Its Thai range includes chocolate, strawberry, cookies and cream, matcha, almond and choco banana. SeekSnack has reviewed many of these alongside Japanese packs, including the Yubari Melon flavour sold in Hokkaido.
The biscuit is made from wheat flour, and most coatings contain milk powder or lactose. Almond versions add tree nuts.
