CORORO is a gummy candy from UHA Mikakuto, a confectioner based in Osaka, Japan. Launched in 2014, it is designed to feel like biting into fresh fruit: a soft, juicy centre held in a thin skin that pops as you bite. Its name plays on koro, a Japanese sound for something small and round.
SeekSnack has reviewed Cororo Kyoho Grape, made with the juice of Kyoho, a large, dark grape popular in Japan. Both its taste and smell come close to the real fruit. Other flavours have included muscat, peach and iyokan, a Japanese citrus, and CORORO is a popular sweet to bring back from Japan.
The skin is made with collagen, an animal protein, so CORORO is not vegetarian. The grape version is coloured with INS 129 (Allura Red), an azo colour that carries a warning label in the EU, and INS 133 (Brilliant Blue).
